As ive been trying to convince everyone for the past 2 weeks, i am not well, so what better excuse to hold a film festival in our place! Movies selected for this festival are movies shown and recognized from 2008 (and earlier) festivals....i dont have time to wade thru all the @##%#@ so im leaving it to semi obscure film festivals to narrow down my list.
Well the screening kicked off yesterday!! we started a bit late due to call of duties and the fact that we had to clean up the mess that our dying plants are creating in the living room! We would like to thank La Cigale for the sushis...theyr the nearest most convenient choice (im a BIG Sakura fan!!); thai massage (that's really part of this resto's name!) for the deep fried honey beef and dumplings! and my kitchen for the deep fried banana with peach!
The host wore a purple top with batwing sleeves in honor of all the french secretaries in the 1980s (Vogue quote) and the guest of honor (Purple!) in blue jacket! Unfortunately, the drinks got the better of the petite host so we were only able to screen 1-1/2 film....ahahahah!!!
First off....in the category of best foreign language film:
1. Let the Right one in - which i'd have to say was a great start!! if you ever needed a hunting, innocent, love story of a vampire set in snow.....this film is for you! swedish film (snow!), about two twelve year olds (innocent!), the boy bullied at school finds strength and confidence in his next-door vampire girlfriend.....what did i just say??! hunting in more ways than one.... great start!
2. The Counterfeiters - German movie about the then greatest counterfeiter, a jew, who the Germans used to help finance the WW2.....
3. 4 months, 3 wks, 2 days - Romanian Film about a teenager looking for abortion during 1980s...in romania! I am thinking this is not a chirpy movie so have to line up my happy places where i can go to for solace after the film!
......... the other film screened yesterday which did not get finished was in the category of best actress....Happy Go Lucky. i have to say i am not convinced yet. if anything, from the first half of the film, i find the character annoying....why cant they make a film about a happy person, without resulting in bad clothes and semiretardedness?! being happy is normal!! you can be happy and still have good taste in clothes! in fact, i'd say happier! the girl so far is annoying and received 2 throw pillows (in my head anyways).....but there is hope, ive not seen the entire film yet! when the other judge wakes up, the screening shall resume!
In other developments, Slumdog millionaire might be showing this weekend so might have to take part of the festival on a different venue: City Center!...but im not sure i'd want to see this film here......but the day is early and there's lots of time to be fickle! im not very excited about this film despite it getting lots of raves....first off im not a fan of bollywood - no offense anyone, it's just a matter of different tastes...but the film was made by Danny Boyle, the director responsible for directing me to one of my favorite books: Trainspotting!!...and a-ha's song Sun always shines on TV was used in the trailer...and that song reminds me of happy times in fifth grade!!..so i got semi-stoked to see it.
*sigh*....soo little time, so many films to see!!
i know you're all having a wonderful weekend, lets get on with the festivities then!!!

done qcat, the vampire awaits you!
Belish, you're right, i like the movie - i esp love the part when they were still kids!! the last 2-3 minutes i could do without - but it's still good. i think danny boyle is making tv game shows and loads of crap his signature...i remember trainspotting also had the same elements. the kids portion of the film was just...well heartbreaking. i shed a slumdog tear!..and that tv show host...well....i wiped my slumdog tear with my middle finger, and pointed it at him.
oohhh and ran into dulcinea there also, u liked it dulc? i assumed you were in the toilets again as soon as the movie finished....we had to stay and watch the dance moves...LMAO!!! not. ok, maybe a little.....ahahaha!

Happy Go Lucky sucks!!! the woman was annoying til the end...i wish films will stop featuring happy women as annoying and with bad taste in clothes and haircuts!!! theres nothing wrong with being happy - one is not a freak to become happy....she seemed to want everyone around her to be happy though - thats whats weird. theres a big lesson here...just because others do not fit your own definition of happy, it does not mean that they are not happy, or that they need fixing. bad clothes however are an eyesore, waste of money and fixable!
that upset me gahhh!!! we gonna go out and take a walk and get replacement for our dying plants!!
Man on The Wire when we gets back! ;D/

Man On Wire - This documentary is about a french man who walked on a rope rigged between the twin towers. of course that's illegal - and thats what made the docu more of an adventure, about fulfilling your dreams, not giving up and how good people can be. he was able to get his friends and a couple of strangers to help him fulfill his dreams. adventure wise, it's really like an adult version of Goonies - that is good! What happened after 'the walk' though made me sad. he became famous, got honored and stuff, but his friends who helped him rigged the wire got deported, and the friendship apparently was never the same, and he broke up with his gf. i like his friends, i love the adventure they embarked in... but he's kinda douche. but it is worth watching just the same. it just gave me the sads that's all. time for a drink!!! waterrrrr!!
next stop, Germany.......The Counterfeiters. ;D

The counterfeiters - what can i say? any survival story of a jew during the holocaust makes a good story - any survival story is a good story for that matter! not as gory as the last ww2 movie i saw - the russian one! - but good just the same...i think im seeing double now, but i want to close this day on a lighter note!!! it's sunday tomorrow so need something inspirational!!!
and so our last movie for the day: Zohan!
catch you peeps tomorrow ;D

it is still nice to watch man on wire qcat....and you like french accents, there's plenty of zat in ze film! im afraid i might have dumbed down that docu, it is not, i is just being emotional, i want everyone to have the happy ending in the movies, i might have read more into it, im sure they're all fine. and he's a performer - they usually have their more than fair share of douchiness!

omg qcat...i did say let the right one in is innocent and hunting, right? well apparently, it is not so in the book. im sure the book is usually better than the film, for there it has more time to get to know and understand the characters. you might want to read the book after the movie, but not the other way around. the book dealt with homosexuality, prostitution, drugs.......
*my eyes my eyes my eyesssssssssss!!!*

Man on Wire is AMAZING! I met the director and 2 of the people involved in the stunt (and film obviously) in Dubai at the film festival. It did not sound appealing to me on paper but I actually rate it as the best documentary in DIFF and one of the best 5 movies (and I saw about 30 while there). It is absolutely poetic, whimsical and visually stunning.
Will be back for more comments later ;D

Waltz with Bashir
saw this one last night. It's a documentary about a jewish military who was present during the palestinian massacre in Shattila and Sabre refugee camp. The documentary centered around his piecing together what happened that day because he has lost his memory about that particular episode. After he served in the military, he cut ties with people he met there, only to reunite with them so he can piece this puzzle together.
Watching this documentary mucks up your mind. The documentary was done in animation, flat, comic style. somehow, having presented it that way seemed to have made it even more disturbing, because like Folman (the guy on repressed memory orgy), the viewer is also left with his imagination to piece it together with him, like his repressed memory, it is not as clear; his hallucinations are the viewers hallucinations, and only at the culmination of the film, when what happened finaly came back to him,it is only then that actual footage was seen.
what's different about this is it dealt with human suffering from another perspective. when you see a war movie, i.e. saving private ryan, it is scary and you actually see gore - it is there in all its 'glory' so you know what you're dealing with. This documentary somehow succeeded to delve into the viewer's psyche and the assault is more disturbing. who knew a picture of a child, drawn, holding on to a truck bar could be just as moving? it offers no excuse for what happened, if anything it dealt with guilt thus the journey to free his mental repression.
people are capable of so much good and evil, it makes one even more amazed at how the psyche works to protect its host. this documentary, if you get into it is more than a film. it is an experience. it's the kind that shuts you up after watching it.
i am against war, i feel it is not worth to sacrifice so much human lives for someone's belief. to massacre a group of people because a certain leader was killed, is pure stupidity to me. i am however in favor of assassination. it is more economical and does not require too much hazardous environmental aftermath.
