Remember how you felt when you first learned of Holocaust? How you felt when you read, seen and heard the extent to which the jews were treated based on their religion? We learned, and we hoped never again.
Remember how you felt when you first learned of segregation in the US? How you felt when you read, seen and heard the extent to which african-americans were treated based on the color of their skin? We learned, and we hoped never again.
Remember how you felt when you first learned of the balkan wars and the Rwandan civil war in the 90s? How you felt when you read, seen and heard the extent to which people were treated based on their ethnicity? We learned and we hoped never again.
Segregation, labeling people and pitching one group against the other never amounted to anything good. We treat each other disrespectfully, with suspected malice and paranoia, and eventually we will reap what se sow.
Why is it that humans seem to be the only ones capable of understanding what happens to them, truly understand the significance of cause and effect - yet refuse to learn from their own life lessons?
let's relive the words of Martin Niemoller:
First they came for the Communists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Communist
Then they came for the Socialists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Socialist
Then they came for the trade unionists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a trade unionist
Then they came for the Jews
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Jew
Then they came for me
And there was no one left
To speak out for me
