Here are three documentaries worth checking out...must be checked out. im kinda bossy today so i say: must be checked out! I was gonna say these should be the "trifecta" of fashion documentaries, good thing i double checked what trifecta means coz i use it loosely sometimes in my head when i mean triple, the same way i would say clusterf$ck when i mean multiple stupid disasters - HAH! anyways, trifecta apparently is more used on betting on horses and im not really interested in horses right now! so another word to make triple more significant....trinity? oohhh sssoooo matrix! the hell! Anyways, fashion docus that i think are important...heh fashion, important...silly:p
1. September Issue by RJ Cutler - This docu is supposedly about the work/drama that goes to making that all important issue of Vogue in September, and Anna Wintour the woman who helms Vogue magazine and is the mother ship of fashion - yeah, like karl lagerfeld and the likes are her beotches. Basically, through Vogue magazine and her wintry stare, she dictates fashion, what goes in each season and what goes out. If she snobs a designer's collection, the designer better hope there are fashion bloggers out there who are influential enough to pick up the slack - otherwise, it is death! Vogue's September issue is what they deem the most important issue because as the PR goes, that's when you really start "changing" your clothes style. At the end of the docu though, you'd realize how j'amazing Grace Coddington is, one of the creative directors of vogue. Really amazing, talented, genius of a woman able to put together interesting foto shoots, pick out clothes to go to that shoot, sort out through all the fashion shows to come up with a 'look'. Reminds you that fashion is really about clothes and beautiful pictures, that sometimes as silly as it could be to others - it still is a lot of work and takes a lot of talent to put through together. Okay, they are obscenely priced those clothes, but it doesnt mean you cant enjoy them through the pictures! and most importantly, grace coddington in this docu is so....down to earth? i dont know another term, but you know, the kind of person that seems to really just appreciate and enjoy the work she does and does not feel like "she's all that?"...no airs or whatever, you'd consider mousy in appearance but is totally awesome!?!
2. Picture Me by Sara Ziff and Ole Schell -If september issue is about the magazine in the fashion world, Picture Me is about the models. Created by a successful model Sara Ziff, this docu is a good look about the highs of modeling and its cost. Kids in highschool and college should really see this film because it is a good look at the modeling profession.
3. Bill Cunningham New York by Richard Press - Quite an inspirational person to me.....let me just wipe a tear daintily as i think about cunningham coz that's how totally awesome he is to me! This guy, who is in his 80s now, has been taking pictures of people mostly in new york since the 60s! long before street/urban fashion blogging is a norm, there is this guy on his bicycle Bill Cunningham who has been picking out trends by taking pictures of people who he thinks are dressed interestingly. i mean even ana wintour is a bit apprehensive to be snubbed by him! and yet despite his success, is a grounded man, lives simply, frugally, not a hint of entitlement (at least from the docu) quite trying hard to be honest to his craft, and refuses to be wined and dined at work...in fashion!?!? and did i say he tries not to get too much money from his work just so he can do whatever he likes!?!
so there you go - three documentaries that will make you appreciate the fashion industry more informedly, meet inspiring people, admire clothes and models without resorting to self-harm.
