Remember the time when we used to look in 'amazement' at people picking up calls and talking loudly in the theater? yeah...that's so passe! there's a whole new group now!
When you go out these days, be ready for the new forms of social 'norms'.
1. People holding up their phones taking pictures/videos of everything. While in Dubai, some locals had a fight because one local jumped the line and the other local didnt like it, so there was a lot of shouting and arabic threats and people trying to put as much distance between them as quickly as possible...and yes, people holding up their phones recording for posterity. so those locals can google themselves up and share that experience with their families and friends!
During the DTFF, one woman cut the line trying to get a picture with omar shariff...omar shariff told her off, apparently telling her to grow some brains or something or learn maths or something, but there was a lot of gestures of fingers pointing to his cranium and lawrence of arabia giving evil eyes and eyebrow raising!......and of course someone recorded the thing on his mobile and promptly sent it to TMZ. i have no sympathy for line cutters unless theres some real physical/mental challenge involved...still, you wouldnt want anyone putting that scene in your life for everyone to watch and point at. did she at least give the consent to have that online?
i know a lot of people post their pictures and other information on social networks, but not all people have the same feeling about having their pictures plastered on the internet or have their whereabouts constantly documented. in real time. but that's the norm now, right?
2. People with humongous loud clicking cameras. It's papparazzi land! Since it is so common now to have high definition camera phones, others are upping the ante by taking pictures using the more professional camera types. You go out anywhere, esp in restaurants, and not far behind, somebody is taking pictures using this huge loud clicking camera, don't those things have a setting so it can quietly take a picture? no? ok so thats a norm now too, right? One time during the latin festival in katara, we were watching this dramatic movie, and towards the climactic scene at the end, a photographer went towards the front of the screen and just started clicking away taking pictures of either crying, bored or sleeping movie goers. okay, he prolly works for katara...but really? you must take a picture while people are watching the movie? people went there to watch a movie right? the ticket didnt say be ready for a photo shoot during the movie.
3. People browsing on their phones while in the theater. I deeply regret that i was not prepared for this. While trying to watch a horrible movie during the DTFF, movie's title was Tollbooth - movie was so horrible a lot of people walked out of the theater, but this guy and his friend, they stayed on and just kept browsing their phone. i dont mind if they use it, but effing have the balls to use it you know! keep it on all throughout but not turn it on and off like a pussy and act like you're trying to hide it because you know what? the other couple seated beside you can see it, the people behind you can see it! who were you trying to hide from!?!? the owner of katara!?!?! how about other people bring a flashlight and have that light constantly flashed on your face on and off? yeah, browsing your iris while watching a movie because i can and i must!!!
so that's the norm now huh??
ohhh...yeah you too, that person who put up her bare feet on top of the chair in front of her in the theater...no curtesy for those people in front and behind you?! they dont exist no? everyone is honored to have to see your feet put up like that?! for most of the duration of the horrible movie. that's the social norm now too?
