There is more to see now around Doha, i would just like to give my imaginary friends an update.
There is now the quite impressive Katara village where they seem to have an amphitheater, a more appropriate place for the philharmonic concerts, photo exhibits and other such venues to present the region's culture.
There is also now an interesting nook in Pearl where only two nicely designed restos are operating away from the maddening, fast becoming noisy fairground on the more developed side of pearl....phew! yeps, there you can sit pretty much close to water and enjoy a drink especially now with this nice weather.
Seen the...'national mosque' near west bay? i am not very big with names so i dont know its official name, but it is now finished and peaceful looking, standing.....beside the road. i can think of a more deserving adjective but suffice it to say, it is worth driving around its perimeter esp at night when it is all lit up.
Aside from the Museum of Islamic Art, which I am glad to say seem to be having more activities now than when they started, there is also the Mathaf: arab museum of modern art - which i will call AMMA. Housed in a more industrialized 'looking' space which i heard used to be a former school building, the concept is fairly new and unique for the place, but soon, i hope, it will find its more strong foothold on what it wants to become. i am throwing the term 'industrialized' lightly around here by Qatar's level. i just mean it is a plain refreshing space just painted clinical white and very dark toilettes!hahaha!i think they were having electrical problems in the toilette that time when we visited. anyhoooooo....right now, i still cant find its distinction of its exhibit from the exhibit in IM Pei's building. I would suggest though, that they become the platform for the emerging artists here in doha. sure the new ones don't have the art street cred yet, but we are writing history everyday, so let them have it. The older artists, with all due respect, can have Pei's building, let's see what the modern artists that Qatar is developing have for exhibit. i am aware that i could be confusing time for technique, but let's keep it simple for now. i am really interested about what the young artists here in doha have to say and present, and i hope to see their works in AMMA.
and of course i have another suggestion....how about screening the docu Exit Through the Giftshop directed by Banksy, so we dont run away with our artistic selves in all these artsy exhibitions? non? it's a good docu and i find it hilarious the more i think about it. the docu, not the museums
