Okaaaayyyy! haters to the left!
Seriously, i think Qatar will host the 2022 world cup. and why not? Qatar, right now, is one of the handful of countries who has the means to host it, money wise.
Qatar's bid for it, as a step to put forth their country forward as a sign of progress, and to spend all that money to qualify, is a grand generous gesture for its citizens, and brings collateral windfall to expats who would continue to have construction work, organizers jobs, etc. Seen from that angle, seems like a win-win situation. As for the huge bill that will be footed by the country to make this possible, i hope that it is a well thought out plan and smartly advised by those who are really concerned for the country of Qatar and not only by consultation firms who as soon as their fees are paid, couldnt care less what happens next...ooh yeah.
This country brings tennis games, film festivals, and other sports here for much less than it would cost somewhere else. Film fest(s) especially pushes the envelope further because films are shown uncut, stories are not the usual mind numbing ones screened locally, yet those things are brought here and tolerated. So football, compared to that is neither socially nor morally jarring for the locals.
But what of the other ramifications hosting this might entail and how tolerant the country would or could be. Did Doha debates even cover this? Football fans afterall are not exactly like say....polo fans. This sport is known for hooligans, alcohol and riots - aside from the usual sportsmanship, camaraderie, overpriced jerseys and other memorabilias FIFA gets a cut from. Usually held in summer, female sports fans are not exactly known to wear thick parkas during summer games. Still, 2022, is still far away. The mayan predictions of 2012 might come, global warming might all of a sudden deliver extreme temperatures, climates re-written all over. but of course you cant stand still for fear of what might happen. But given how predictable and damaging the weather has been lately, im sure drainages are already being planned...if not for unexpected summer rain in middle east....but at least for all the fans peeing at the same time from their day's share of diuretics, tea and coffee.
Speaking of which, how is alcohol going to be served if at all? This is not a mocking question but an honest one. Of course, games can be held without such, they're not a necessity except if you're alcoholic, but how? it's not an impossibility of course, afterall, i heard motor bike races are held here, without any parties and drinking on the side. you want motorbike race? you get your motobike race and stare at them going round the circuit numerous times.
And what of the tourists, groups of mixed gender or unmarried couples who are going to be staying in the hotels? How is that going to be arranged?
2022 - that is 12 yrs from now. there are lots of things that can happen from here til then. In the meantime, should Qatar win the bid, construction business will be booming - actually, a lot of other businesses will be booming. The massive construction already ongoing will have renewed meaning and definite purpose. world cup.
but who is Qatar dealing with? who is FIFA? who is FIFA accountable to? what happened to the last 5 world cup hosting countries outside europe? What benefits were reaped? What did the previous hosting countries gain after hosting? How is south africa faring after the recent one? Qatar will not have the social outcry of some locals in south africa wherein they too had to pay huge sums to fifa just so they can get into the business of selling their food near the stadiums? never mind that they had been doing that practice for some years before that world cup happen. i dont think that will happen here though because no such small business exist here. i mean i cant imagine fifa will forbid the small store workers from serving the cars honking outside for service unless they wear official fifa shirts or something, right?! I mean....WHAT WILL BE THE OFFICIAL WORLD CUP TEA OF 2022!?!?!
But i am sure it is going to be a big party and it is going to be fun! Qatar will prove itself capable of hosting a huge soiree and prove that fun can still be had with minimal alcohol levels. on that note....how come nobody here is exploring the idea of Qatar being a world-famous destination for alcoholic rehab catering only to the ultra rich or whatever? sleep on that and get back to me!
