Apparently, the correct translation of this in english is "Milk of Sorrow".
The story of this movie is quite a novelty for me. It's a peruvian film about a woman whose mother was gang raped by the military during the militarization of Peru. Her mother's husbandfather was killed in a brutal way in front of her mother and the mother, after surviving all these horrible experiences, often sings about it - as in the lyrics of her song is about the graphic details of that horrible episode of her life. I mean alanis morissette has nothing on this old woman.
The movie opens with the mother singing her song on her death bed and the daughter, who is already a young woman herself, taking care of her. The dillema unfolds as when the mother dies, the daughter wants to give her a proper burial but does not have the money to do so and has to find a job. But she grew up with that soundtrack and bedtime stories - she distrusts people, she is paranoid around them, freaks out when someone brushes up to her and you can understand why after the first scene coz you know....hello, her mom's repertoire has lyrics that goes something like: "i can taste the gun powder when they made me eat my husband's penis after they shot it...him...etc". So yeah, she's not very excited about going out in the world to look for a job, but this time, for her mother, she has to.
ive not read about this movie much but apparently, it's about how a mother's pain is transferred to their daughters through their milk when breastfeeding. i think i heard this being referenced sometime in the movie by the girl's uncle but i was still reeling from the mother's songs... this is how some people deal with it in peru. so dont get your undies in a bunch telling me how not all daughters of raped mothers end up having a hard time adjusting to the usual life. but it's not the milk, duh because you can lemon-cayenne detox that out of you.
You kno what else is in this movie? you wont watch it anyway so i'll lay it out to you now. Apparently, women during that horrible time of militarization had to stuff their vaginas with potato(s) to help prevent men from raping them. as in POTATO. none of those cucumbers or eggplants but potato. and this potato is stuffed inside of them for sometime because you know it's not as easy whipping them out and stuffing it inside of you if you see a potential rapist approaching. It stays inside for sometime that it actually grows roots leaving the woman with a vegetable patch inside. if someone still insists to go in there could end up making a mash potato with their weiners. So the daughter ends up doing the same thing even though times are no longer as violent as her mother's time - and in one of the scenes, she was clipping the roots off of the potato.
This is not pr0n movie btw. It's a serious movie and with all due respect to the characters in the film....but well it is quite educational. and talk about broadening your perspective in life and having a different perspective of Megarmart's fruits and veggies section.
unfortunately, those are the images that will stay stuck in my mind about this film. The pacing is awkward as i can imagine why, i wouldnt know how to go forward either with a movie that has these elements without ending up with a movie like the killer tomatoes movie. i mean if bruckheimer made this film, the potatoes would have been exploding, or spielberg would have made the potatoes ride a bike and then fly to the moon but no.
So the woman did find work and eventually agreed to get the potato out of her or else she'd die from infection. No graphic scenes here - thanks to the director, but is enough to make you shy away from french fries for some time.
Anyway, this won an award in Berlin film festival and is currently in the running for best foreign film in the Oscars.
You want a lesson from this movie? Next time you pick out a selection of songs for your babies, think about this movie.
Now you know why there are potatoes in this movie poster.
