We have been discovering and recalling movies lately, im making a list.
1. The Orphanage/La Orfanato - Spanish movie from the producer who made Pan's Labyrinth, and the most interesting i've seen so far. The premise of this movie could be qualified as a horror flick, but actually it is not. I'd say it is more a dark take on Peter Pan/Wendy story. A couple moved into an old orphanage and refurbished it to make it their home/office. The husband is a doctor and the woman will start a business taking care of at least 5-6 special children. They have a son who is adopted, HIV positive and penchant for imaginary friends. The story unfolds when an old woman come knocking knowing about the kid's history then shortly thereafter, upon the opening of the wife's business, while the son was playing with his imaginary friends, the son disappeared.
2. Requiem for a Dream - This one stars jennifer connelly, jared leto, one of the wayan brothers (butt nekkid), and Ellen burstyn. this is about drug addiction and its consequences. if talking about a druggie movie, Trainspotting is still my favorite. what's new for me in this movie is how the main druggie's mother got sucked into addiction as well. Sad movie.
3. The Wackness. Male coming of age movie, set in the mid 90s, summer, good soundtrack. Quite charming actually. Stars Ben Kingsley and Josh Peck with Famke Jannsen and Juno's bestfriend Thirlby. Josh recently graduated from highschool, he sells weeds to the kewl kids but not actually one of them - he's the least popular of the popular ones. He also has lots of other interesting clients, among them is a psychologist and father of one of the most popular girl in school - ben kingsley. He has sessions with him and for pay, instead of cash he gives him weeds...and oddly enough ended up forging an odd friendship with him. the more i think about this movie, the more charming it gets. it's a boy's love story and about friendship, light comedy, and minus the sappiness.
4. Session 9 - This is supposed to be a horror/thriller. I was even too psyched and scared to watch it...it ended up.....bleagh. Good actors though. It's about four men who works as......i think they clean up old buildings something. anyhooo, they were working on this old mental asylum building trying to clean it up within a week so they can get a bonus but along the way, one of the worker's stumbled upon a box of recordings of one of the infamous patient's treatment/sessions....then...i dunno, one of the workers ended up murdering the rest of them. im not sure there's any connection between the old mental asylum and what happened to them coz the murderer seemed wacked out even before stumbling into this gig. i suppose the asylum is just the backdrop to tell the guy's story and how it resembles one of the former patients...but that's not a far stretch...duhhh...it's mental asylum! supposedly the tapes/recordings of old treatment/session resembled what happened to them.....so it's like The Ring but instead of video tape, it's the voice recordings. the voices in the tapes are creepy though. i dunno, maybe i'll watch this again to understand it better, i wasnt that good when seen mostly under the covers.
5. La Haine. Stars Vincent Cassell.....and ive just confirmed im really old. I am already too cynical and jaded for these type of films. French movie set in the wake of a riot due to one of the gangsta kids being manhandled by the police, ending up dead in the hospital. Vincent Cassell's character acting really stupidly thinking he should avenge his death but only ending up sucking his friends into more stupidness. moral of the story is hate breeds hate. This is a good movie for kids. as for me, it's a pain for me to watch in a movie stupid decisions being made then having the characters ive emotionally invested in killed. it's saaaaaadddd.....and stuppiddddddddddddd.......waaaaaaaahhhhh!! dont get me wrong, the movie is good, but most of the characters are just sad and...well emotional quotient anyone??? so i give you the ending...
Tonight we are reviewing.....Hard Candy one of my faves from 2 yrs back.
