If you're a fan of movies with moral ambiguity, you can add this in your collection.
The center of the story is a guy named Benigno who works as a nurse who specializes in comatose patients. But let me tell you about this other character first:
BALDING DUDE WRITER: he works for a magazine and in one of his assignments, he did a profile on a female bullfighter. said female bullfighter is in the midsts/close aftermath of a somewhat messy breakup with bullfighter boyfriend. to show contrast in the woman's character, while she works in a somewhat testosterone dominated profession (bull poking!?!?), she seemed vulnerable about her relationship with the other bullfighter and for added value, she has phobia of snake. The reporter on the other hand seemed to have a 'traumatic' recent past relationship as well with a girl who became an addict and thus for emotional range can be seen shedding a tear every now and then when he watches a ballet or hears coo-coo-roo-koo-koooo paloma. i swear. they ended up together.
then one fateful day, shebullfighter got rammed by a bull and is in a coma. that's moral ambigousness #1 already for me: coz while i hate them poking bulls, i also dont wanna see bullpokers comatose. ;D
this is when reporter met Benigno, as bullpoker got confined in the same place where Benigno works. He got drawn to him coz he seem to take care of this patient of his very well - whereas reporter cant even bear to speak to his comatose girlfriend – not that he is grossed out or anything, just that..he’s not that kind of man.
Benigno is taking care of this beautiful girl whose father is a pyschiatrist. Father wants the best nurse to take care of her and since Benigno is good at his job, came highly recommended. Benigno had a good practice as apparently, he has a stunted social life as he spent most of his life taking care of his mom, where incidentally he also learned to become a hairstylist, manicurist aside from taking care of her medical needs due a nurse. thus sometimes, you can see overtones of well....he looked gay at times which kinda reassured the comatose girl's dad as she is left to his care most of the time: in one scene, father saw him massaging her thigh while talking to the father. Clearly father looked uncomfortable so asked if he’s gay – he said yes to calm him down – and chill coz Benigno at this point is all professional.
Everyone connected to this girl's case, even her ballet teacher who visits her often knows how dedicated Benigno is to her. He talks to her all the time, watches ballet and silent movies for her to tell her about them as these are this girl's fave time killer prior to her comatose days - which at this point is on its fourth year.
NOW FOR THE MESSY PART: Patient of Benigno is someone who he had a crush on for a long time. Her dance studio is right across Benigno's house and often he would spend time watching her in the studio through his window. This was shown in a not too creepy way, however: just another nerdy guy looking at a girl conveniently thru his window. afterall, it's not his fault the studio couldnt afford blinds or curtains or tint the glass to prevent gawkers. Benigno, pre-comatose days of this girl, even as much as approached her and walked her home. and one time, when he had not seen her in the studio for quite a while, he went to her dad's clinic which is also in their home and pretended like he wants treatment - and benigno incidentally stole a hair clip of the girl as memento....precious! and by now is really gonna be right up there in the creepy cafe. obssessive much?
So when the girl fell ill, Benigno saw this as opportunity and even boasts that they have a better relationship than most as he talks to her, take care of her needs, etc....and they do not fight. ;D this he shared with the bullpoker's boyfriend who at this point is becoming his good friend in that they are both opening up to each other about how they feel for their comatosehos girls.
READY YOUR BARF BAG: One night, Benigno came to work telling comagirl about this movie he saw the other night that particularly disturbed/confused him. You've to commend the director for the succeeding scenes: Benigno in the beginning is shown doing his usual thing taking care of the girl, massaging, etc, while relating the movie he saw. The next scenes were all about the old silent film titled the shrunken lover. In this movie, the girl is a scientist who fell in love with this overweight man. she wanted to help him lose weight and thus invented this concoction that's supposed to do that. and it did. however, the guy wouldnt stop losing weight til he shrunk. as in shrunk to thumbelina proportion. dwarfie bf felt guilty for shrinking too much and making her gf depressed, he ran away and went to his mom. girl felt lost and despondent but in the end found his mom's house and took him back contented for him to be this tiny. Now, if you were growing up in the 80s you prolly are aware of the rick mouranis' disney movie: Honey I shrunk the kids, and how innocent and adventurous that was. now this old silent film that Benigno is relating that he said ‘affected’ him is the adult version of that. maaannnnn....yeh, kinda thumbelina porn. the shrunken guy went down on his girlfriend as in waaay down and coz he's so tiny well went inside her!! Now while i was laughing over this, imagine what Benigno is doing. NYAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!
EWWWWWWWW!!! EWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!
So anyway, on the other hand, reporter’s girlfriend’s exboyfriend confessed to reporter that the day she was majorly poke by the bull, she was about to confess to reporter that she’s leaving him coz she is shacking up with the ex again. Soo good thing he didn’t spend much time talking to her during coma coz girl is a flamer. Reporter left spain to write about something else, far away from any forms of bulls and their supertight costumes.
Months past, it was discovered that comatose girl of benigno which btw is named Alicia (I now remember!) missed her period, then confirmed pregnant, found out it was Benignos so he got jailed.
Reporter one day read that his ex bullpoker died so he went back to spain to….maybe gloat!!!ahahah! no. Around this time he also discovered that Benigno is in jail and does not have anyone else. Reported went back to Spain to help him out, get a new lawyer for him and find out what happened to Alicia and their baby coz nobody is giving him any info…understandably.
GET YOUR TISSUE: Reporter eventually discovered that Alicia was revived from coma while giving birth or thereabouts, but baby died. Reporter moved in to Benigno’s place across alicia’s dance studio and that’s where he saw her, looking well. Unfortunately, he was advised by benigno’s lawyer not to tell him anything about her. Benigno in Honor of Romeo and Juliet, not knowing a thing about Alicia and being far away from her hair clip (remember the one that he stole? I think that triggered it!) – well benigno committed suicide.
Fast forward to another scene, reporter watching ballet and behind him is Alicia also watching the said ballet. During intermission, reporter sat across from her, not really initiating contact, but Alicia looking like she ..well was drawn to him, spoke to him. Ballet teacher who knows benigno saw this and recognized the reporter as well, approached him out of earshot from Alicia saying: you and I have to talk, nothing is that simple”….or soemthign to that effect.
THE END.
Now why was it titled Talk To Her you say? Duhhhhhhhhh….coz u’r only supposed to talk to comatose people not sex0r them!!!! I know, my insights on films are brilliant!
Basically that’s the moral of the story, but his spooge did revive her from coma….so….it’s like…..would u rather stay in coma or come back from coma but in exchange, you’ve to be raped? Keep in mind Benigno claimed he really loves her, wants to marry her and would do anything for her…..unfortunately, including sperminating her. And get this, Benigno for added touch, his name literally means “do no harm” or can do no harm, or something to that effect. Although it was painless for Alicia, it still is rape…
