we'r on our way to city center for some knick knacks and parking was so horrible i fell asleep while looking for a parking space!!....so thought what the heck might as well catch a movie while we'r at it ;D
caught the 230 screening and well.....you can sleep in the theater, it's just another gangster movie with great promise but didnt deliver. nothing new at all. kill me but the only ridley scott movie i can truly say i enjoyed is Good Year and that's only coz it was an in-flight movie and the girl has nice skirts.
this movie is a long drawn out story with half baked characters, which is weird considering how long the movie was. lots of scenes u can do without that when denzel and crowe finally had a scene together it was.....well nothing. no chemistry at all. somebody's got to find denzel another role, he's always either a mobster, a good cop, a bad cop. he's gonna get a nicolascage syndrome if he doesnt find a different role soon.
u can wait for this in your tv, u wont miss much if u dont watch it. better replay the untouchables (aside from good acting and story telling they have good clothes too!) if u feel like watching a gangster movie or get johnny depp's Blow if you wanna watch a drug lord movie - at least Blow had a more creative scene of showing how much money drug lords get ;D

I went with Nexxie and we both hated it. It's possibly the worst gangster movie ever.

Except for the Godfather, and the Godfather 2, all gangster movies are "Raabbish". Goodfellas? Not a big fan of Joe Joe Pesci Scarface? Snort all that coke and not die immediately...right! Reservoir Dogs? Can't say. Haven't seen it Pulp fiction? Not really a gangster movie. Poor Marceuls Wallce... Gangs of New York? Bleh Lock stock and two smoking barrels? good point Snatch? Dude, that was comedy Love, honour and Obey? Don't know what you are talking about Heat? More of a heist movie Sin City? Yuck Gotti? Rather watch the Sopranos... over and over again Once upon a time in... ahhh you're raabbish! The coshernostra, nice... but 4+ hours for a movie! C'mon!

Actually, American Gangster is not completely bad. It's far from any other gangster movie, but it was the whole point of it. A black gangster taking over the usual italian maffia. Where you had the good old Brando/De Niro/Pacino cliches, here you have the urban negro folklore. The movie has great shots of the poor black areas of New York, and an enormous soundtrack of 60s-7os black music. But as sirf said, it's overly long, and the characters are quite bland. D. Washington's motives are thrown in loosely in the opening with his mentor, and that's it. He doesn't seem to care all throughout the movie. His links with his family (as per the negro family cliche ) don't appear on screen. Same for Crowe, his family background is just useless.

So it is a remake of Hoodlum? No - not even close. And Hoodlum was raabbish. American gangster is infinitely more intelligent.

some directors, screen writers have a good way of telling stories and weaving the characters together. for a movie to be good personally, it either has to have a good story, or good characters, or good way of relating it thru editing, sometimes no matter how good an actor is doesnt cut it.
so many good gangster movies have already been done as mentioned above, ridley scott has a lot of things he has to live up to or surpass for this movie to be memorable not just as the black gangster movie - mafia style.
snatch is a good film coz the characters are interesting, the lines are good, the editing is good. watching it u wont feel like saying "enough with this scene, whats next?!"....thats how good snatch is ;D
american gangster has neither. it's an age old story, yet not enough scene to make u sympathetic to any character. something's lacking or falls short to achieving this that in the end, it doesnt make u care what happen to them. take the villain dirty cop trupo for example, his character is so bad u'd want to pull his mustache one by one. but in the end what did he get? in a scene where audience is supposed to see his downfall....all that happened is he spilled his coffee on the bed! a badass cop and all u get is a soiled sheet!?!?...well ok he shot himself but.....bleagh!
blacks has to be more unique as gangster than what was shown, theres gotta be something more than the black women cutting dope while bare breasted, where'r the garrish 60s-70s clothes? rusell crowe looked like miami vice at one point? wheres jimi hendrix and the rolling stones?!? ;D
this movie had good premise. denzel's character is an intelligent one, so does russell crowe's, but u wont see it in the movie other than when he got a letter saying he passed the bar exam. and what of his quirky crew? they would have been interesting...bla bla bla yadda yadda yadda

that's not the point, the Stones are white and british! The soundtrack at least seems authentic (maybe a little too much southern, but that's ok). And I don't think that the urban ghettos like those shown in the movies were place where you could see that many garrish clothes And at least we actually saw black nipples in the theater ;D

but music is the least of this movie's problems:))
i'd say the mustache on the characters...josh brolin's and joe morton's were funny....and the botox on his asian contact's face..anyone remember this guy as the villain in the transporter?ahahaha!
