im gonna watch it right now, anyone wants a copy bring me ur flash drive ;D
*hours later....*
it's a good film the idea is fresh...sorta coz the film is like 3-4 yrs old.
It's about a family in east Germany. when alex (main character) was young, their father escaped berlin to migrate to the west and according to his mom his father escaped with his girlfriend. Due to depression, his mom stopped speaking, became depressed until she had to be committed to a mental institution. When mom finally recovered, as soon as she got home, she got rid their apartment of all traces of his dad, and mom went totally communist fanatic. Dedicated all her time and effort embracing communism.
Fast forward some yrs later when alex is in his mid 20s, some months before the fall of the berlin wall. Michael was in a rally with those demanding the tearing down of the wall, while his mom is on a cab on her way to be given an award for her dedication to communism - stuck in the traffic due to the rally. when she decided to get off the cab, she saw the police beating up, arresting those in the rally. when she saw alex among them, got a heart attack, then the real story of goodbye lenin enfolded.
the mom went into coma and all throughout the political changes in berlin. Berlin wall finally came down, traces of communism one by one began to peal away and people are now adjusting to the realities of the "free world". People lost their jobs, people migrating to the west, structures changing, etc. She slept through it all in a coma. 8 months later, she woke up but dr warned that any sort of excitement could cause her another heart attack which she might not survive anymore.
Against doctors advice and his sister's advice, alex i suppose partly feeling guilty for the his mom's heart attack took his mom home to live with them.
set in the time when east germans we're struggling with the changes the re-unification brought against his mom's dedication to communism, when they took her home from the hospital, alex had to recreate the old berlin as his mom knew it. he and his sister took elaborate pains just to recreate the old berlin, redecorating his moms room again to how it was before she went into coma, started looking for 'all stuff berlin' i.e. a certain brand of pickle that his mom wants, only to find out that these things arent that easy to find anymore, bla bla bla..........
it's really an interesting film and funny and poignant all at the same time, and mostly it's about a son's relationship with his mom.
we see films about mom-daughter relationship most of the time, this is the first film ive seen focusing on a son-mother relationship. though the movie is really good, watching this struck a personal cord thats why though i find it a good film and funny, i cant bear to watch it again anytime soon. bleagh.
