this is a good story of who would have been your antagonist is actually the protagonist, and ur protagonist nothing but an essential wall to a story, and the woman, beautiful but sadly, a conniving weakling evil @#%#$^# who eventually had to _______!!! (spoiler) ...sorry coundlt help myself....moving on.
set in east berlin 1984, this is a story of two men on different sides of the fence. one passionate about his country (weisler), the other about his art (dreyman).
dreyman, a good writer, has friends in the high places so although his friends are quite politically controversial and are under surveillance, dreyman manages to keep his nose clean and remain in the good graces of his govt. He seems to be the only 'normal' one, quite content where he is even though his friends are clearly suffering from the govt's oppression. he doesnt rock the boat and in exchange, he can still do what he enjoys (writting), have a girlfriend, remain popular in every side, and remain oblivious to the troubles around him.
Weisler on the other hand is a dedicated servant to his govt., idealist, a good and methodical spy/interrogator, seem to be willing to do anything for his country. happy where he is, although quite devoid of all the humanity that dreyman enjoys.
the conflict starts when a high govt official has the hots for dreyman's girlfriend (yes conflicts seem to always start with women ;D), so orders another official to spy on dreyman just so he can come up with dirt to remove him out of the equation and have the girl for himself...so enter weisler the spy called upon to come up with the dirt, and there the story and moral dilemma ensue.
by spying on dreyman, weisler rediscovers the things missing in his life, good sex, good books, friends...life itself, etc. realizing that he's just being used as a pawn for the politician's personal gain, his idealism starts crumbling down, and even go as far cover for the very ppl he is supposed to be spying on, actually becoming a writer himself in a weird way --- exactly the same time that dreyman the writer started growing balls to finally do something about what's happening around him. there were a lot of times he could have gone berserk, sanctimonious apecrap (he is a writer afterall!) for all the things happening to his friends and even his girlfriend but didnt. if uve seen the movie closer, he is like jude law's character, and weisler - clive owen -- minus the profanity.
but anyways, this is also a story of human smugness and humility. how ppl often think that they alone achieve greatness, without realizing the sacrifices others made for their success. while at the same time leaves you wondering, did their drama really matter? neither their victories contirbuted to the crumbling of the berlin wall...but there is a lesson there (i is getting a headache!)
i like this movie for its simplicity. there were a lot of times where it could have been pumped up, glamorized, made hollywood-exciting, or be preachy, but wasnt...i think it was just made that way to rub it in how boring weisler's life is..or maybe how it is from weisler's view.
it's a simple story about the goodness in men and redemption, and reminder how circumstances bring out the best and worst in ppl. it's a good movie to watch on your own or with mute friends. this is a german movie and comes with english subtitles. i still have it in my memory stick, 10 riyals if u want a copy!kidding:PPPPP of course i will lend you a copy!!!...but you've to sing Scorpion's winds of change first..harharhar!ewww!!!
