Brian McKnight - 10
This 10th album from one of RnB's 'senior statemen' is simply brilliant. He's tended to be weepy and cringey to listen to for those of us not inclined to 'get in touch with that feminine side' through song. This album is a departure from all that 'Boyz II men' style. Its soulful, mature, original and always triumphant. This guy is clearly in a good place on this one. Song of the album: Again. 7/10
Tyrese - Black Ty/Alter Ego
Talk about snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. This double CD effort would've been brilliant if I could go back and remove the 'double CD' from this sentence. The first disc is nothing short of genius. There is an odd, but surprisingly seemless fusion of hard lyrics and often easy, melodic and rhythmic tunes. You'll bop your head to these.
Forget the 2nd disc. Tyrese can't rap to save his life. Pity - some of the beats are club fillers. Song of the album: Better to know. 6/10
Fantasia - Fantasia
One song - When I see you. The rest are nearly average fare at best. Back to that song... the best RnB song of the new season bar none. Its so brilliant, its clearly misplaced and will no doubt be released as a single to boost what will otherwise be poor sales. This album is decidedly commercial and safe. The lady has a brilliantly smoky voice in the guise of Macy Gray... but is less soulful in delivery. Not a memorable album. I'd wait for the single. Song of the album: When I see you. Outstanding. 3/10
More tomorrow...
