So i stumbled upon this article online about not shampooing - cant remember which one specifically so just google okay!? ive been noticing that for the past 7 years, that my hair, after 24 hours, tend to become icky oily. i mean, if you shower in the morning then have to catch a flight at night and not shower before you catch your flight - trust that when you get to dubai in the morning, they can use the grease in your hair to fry scrambled eggs for breakfast! that oily. WHY!?!? WHY!?!?
Apparently, based on this article thats based on this article that's based on such studies - you know how it goes when you're surfing the net: because of what's in shampoos right now that promises you softer, shinnier hair - these chemicals actually messes up your body's regulation of oil, makes you over produce it waaay more than normal. then couple that with extreme heat in doha, sandstorms, airconditioning and the type of water you get...yeps, dont get attached to your hair too much coz it's gonna be bye bye hairy earlier than usual. so anyway, i had nothing to do, and i remember seeing my aunt who has lived in dubai for more than 20 yrs and is still rocking an awesome healthy long hair...i mean she's in her 50s but you wouldnt know it by the quality of her hair and her hair secret apparently is not shampooing the hair everyday. i didnt explore how not often coz back then i thought...well i couldnt even think about not shampooing! anyhoo, as i said, i have nothing to do so why not sacrifice for the advancement of studies on hair retention rrrright!!? such a totally kewl cause! and there was just a recent scare here in doha about shampoo and shampoo getting removed from the store shelves in doha......sooooooo why not!?! and i'll be seeing my man dave grohl in a concert so to show my solidarity with him, get grungy, greasy unshampooed hair!
so what happened: it was a mess. oily mess! it was yucky for most parts but just like the LGBT campaign, with total respect for its cause and not to belittle the root of the campaign, it gets better.
first i just tried shampooing every other day, then after a week, moved to once a week, then.....the ultimate goal: once a month to revert the body back to its original/normal oil regulation. it's like a shampoo rehab! but the most important part before you try this experiment is you get a decent brush. this brush is supposed to be made of boar's hair, i couldnt find it anywhere here, i supposed it's because it's a porky product! but it is very important! as you shower everyday without shampooing, this brush will clean, redistribute the oil in your hair like no other brush could. you'll notice a lot of fiber-like thingies on your brush that came from your hair, but just go on with your life. So you brush it with that and then after, you brush it with a normal brush, so your hair just looks fresh and not greasy greasy at all...it even looks "thicker" by the strand and "fresh".
as for the smell, i was reassured by my husband (with the threat of starvation) that my hair did not smell like anything, it didnt smell like strawberries definitely but it wasnt anything offensive either - so i think it is just fine. okay, i dont do yoga/gym and i dont sweat like normal people and i dont work in construction so that might account for my hair not smelling bad...and i did threaten starvation if he complained...so i dont know. but as for my friends in construction, you have to be extra vigilant with your construction buddies when you try this. if your bus seatmates start hanging out with someone else and refused to be seated next to you on your way home from your jobsite, maybe ...just maybe there's somethign about your hair. but as for me, when i tried this, all my friends just moved out of doha permanently, i showered everyday with really hot water then cold towards end, and i was constantly brushing my hair with the boar brush and the other hair brush, and i work from home....so my nonchalance. but i did notice a difference in my hair afterwards. i had a great time during the foofighter's concert despite my unshampooed hair, and after that full month without shampoo, i now shampoo just once a week and i like my hair better, it looks healthier, softer, less fallen hairs in the shower if none. but what acquaintances notice though is my skin, apparently it's the one that got more noticeably better than hair. i had oily face too fug! but got better!! (??)
anyway, right now, actually i wouldnt want anyone to notice my hair coz i had a hair cut, i just asked for 3 inches to be trimmed off it, but the stylist proceded to chop and chop until i got a Rachel like it was the '90s!! the fug!!!!!!!!!! so after a few hours walking in the mall, i returned and asked her to just cut all the layers off, and so my hair is just up to below my ears, and when i chopped off my bangs, you know, to uplift my spirits a little...i ended up getting a Dora!! as in Dora the Explorer's hair!!! waaaaahhhhhhh!!!!
so there: the experiment, the shampoo, and the hair!
